ADG Performance Festival 2009 presents 52 artists from around the globe along with tributes to two modern masters, Donald McKayle and Erick Hawkins.
The Opening Night Gala on Thursday September 10th offers a special tribute to living dance legend Donald McKayle, with his solo “Angelitos Negros” performed by Nejla Yatkin. Mr. McKayle will be present. A reception will follow the performance. On Saturday night Mr. McKayle brings the outstanding dancer Stephanie Powell to perform “Angelitos Negros” and a second work “I’ve Known Rivers.”
Thursday September 10th also begins a centennial tribute to the late modern dance pioneer Erick Hawkins (1909 – 1994.) Katherine Duke, Artistic Director of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, will present Hawkins’ “Cantilever I” – first performed in 1963 – a piece for four dancers with music by Hawkins’ lifelong collaborator, composer Lucia Dlugoszewski. The music will be played live by five musicians directed by trombonist David Taylor. This piece will be repeated on Friday evening. A second Hawkins work “Classic Kitetails” is offered on Saturday at 3 pm, danced by Todd Rosenlieb Dance.
The festival honors three other renowned artists with performances of rarely seen solo works. On opening night Lotte Goslar’s inimitable “Life of a Flower” will be performed by Ara Fitzgerald. Then on Saturday night Jeff Duncan’s masterpiece “La Mesa del Brujo” with music by Meredith Monk will be performed by Kathy Wildberger, and Daniel Nagrin’s exquisite “Dance in the Sun” will be performed by Raphael Boumaila of the Limon Company.
In all, this Festival will present 52 companies and artists with works ranging from modern to post-modern to performance art to cultural hybrids. Some highlights include former Forsythe dancer Francesca Harper, Bert Gstettner from Vienna, Phluxus from Australia, Peter Pucci, Lauri Stallings, Li Chiao-Ping, and Ursula Payne. Former Hawkins’ dancers Cathy Ward, Cori Terry, Catherine Tharin, and Gloria McLean add to the celebration of Hawkins’ legacy. The five programs reveal the remarkable diversity of contemporary dance styles.
Each evening in the lobby video of works by Mr. McKayle and Mr. Hawkins will be shown.
